1. 10 Reasons for Beginning the Day with a Devotion
Reason #10: Enthusiasm
If you have children, or nieces and nephews, chances are you
have attended your share of elementary school plays. Last year
I witnessed the best school play I've ever seen. "The Audition,"
presented by our daughter's sixth grade class was thoughtful,
funny, and finely acted. Proof of its power was our watching it
for two hours in a hot room, and clapping wildly when it was over.
After the performance, I asked our little star, Jovonna, how they
were able to do so well. She felt that their success had something to
do with a cast ritual. Before each performance, their teacher called
them all into a circle and had them assume a squatting position.
Next, they were directed to slowly rise, all the while chanting with
increasing vigor and volume, "Fun, fun, fun....!" When all were standing and after having shouted "fun" for the umpteenth time, the teacher shouted, "Are we ready to do this?" You can guess the answer.
Those young actresses and actors stirred up enthusiasm before
each presentation. They were on fire for each performance
because they chose to be and took time to fire themselves up.
Morning devotion is a time of firing ourselves up for another
day of journeying and adventuring. Based on the root meaning
of "enthusiasm," such an experience is deeply spiritual. "Enthusiasm"comes from the Greek "en" (in) and "theos" God. Thus, to be filled with enthusiasm is to be in God, and to have God in you.
Now, that's the way to start a day!
